Columbus, Indiana is renowned worldwide for its architectural innovations. The State Street Corridor Project Bridge is one more site added to the city’s Architectural Tour. The $2.185 million first phase of the State Street Project centers on improvements to the Haw Creek Bridge. The bridge improvements are being made to increase pedestrian safety by widening the existing pedestrian zone. The goal of the project is to generate more economic activity occurring on the east side of Columbus. Design elements were incorporated to capture the spirit of Columbus. For exemple, the 10 vertical elements with an industrial-art-inspired design were attached to the outer edge of the bridge as a way of paying homage to the city’s industrial history. This unique bridge offers walking and bicycle paths, gathering areas, and green spaces for visitors and residents to enjoy. The new walkways are ADA compliant. In order to provide safe passage for pedestrians and bicyclists, a connection from the Gateway Node to the People trail passes under the bridge. The concrete base of the green spaces supports patterned brick walkways, crushed pavement and puzzle benches. The bridge was completely restructured in order to accommodate the new pedestrian walkways on both sides. In addition to widening the structure, the guard rails between the traffic and pedestrian pathway was poured with SCC concrete (self consolidating concrete ).
