Howard Park, located near downtown South Bend at 219 S St. Louis Blvd, is the city’s oldest park. In 14 months, the 120-year-old park was completely renovated. The renovation, comprised of an $18 million investment, now offers an ice trail and pond, a playground, a support building, a concession stand, an interactive series of water fountains, an event lawn for concerts, and a community building as part of its new offerings. The ice trail is the project’s main attraction. It includes areas where visitors can skate uphill, downhill and over a bridge, which is the only ice skating bridge in the nation currently. Howard Park’s renovation is an attempt to unite the South Bend community. Both the playground and the ice rink are ADA accessible as well utilizing specialized equipment. Another way the park is hoping to bring people together is through providing the space to host different events.
